Dr. Peter Tippett, DataMotion co-Chairman and Healthcare IT Pioneer, Honored with Distinguished Alumni Award
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – December 14, 2016 – DataMotion, an experienced secure data delivery provider, is pleased to announce that Peter Tippett, M.D., Ph.D. and co-Chairman of the DataMotion Board of Directors, was recently honored with the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine Alumni Board’s Distinguished Alumni Award. The award recognizes “an outstanding PhD or MD/PhD alumnus/a whose work has made a significant mark in the medical sciences and whose efforts have brought about distinction for the CWRU School of Medicine.”
Considered a pioneer and foremost authority on health IT – with diverse credits ranging from serving on the President’s Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC) to creating the first commercial anti-virus product – Tippett was honored with the award at The Annual Alumni Homecoming luncheon, Friday October 14, 2016.
“I am humbled and honored to be selected as a Distinguished Alumni,” said Dr. Tippett. “The excellent foundation I received at CWRU School of Medicine was a big stepping stone to a career dedicated to making our healthcare system work better for everyone. I am grateful for the opportunity to make a difference and look forward to continuing the work to empower healthcare organizations with vital new capabilities that improve care coordination and ultimately patient health.”
Tippett is the former chief medical officer for Verizon, where he also led the Innovation Incubator. Previously, he was Vice President of Security and Industry Solutions for the company’s global enterprise unit. Tippett came to Verizon in 2007 following its acquisition of managed security service leader, Cybertrust, a company he co-founded. He was CEO of NCSA, founder of TruSecure – a large security services company – and Chairman of MD-IT, a health IT company. Tippett also oversaw the enterprise and security products group at Symantec. Earlier, he worked in software development and created the first commercial anti-virus product, later known as Norton AntiVirus. He was also founder and CEO of Certus International, where he pioneered now widely used technologies such as the rescue disk. Tippett joined the DataMotion board in 2015 to help guide its secure health information exchange initiatives.
“In the two years since Dr. Tippett joined the DataMotion Board of Directors, his passion for making healthcare data easily accessible for providers and patients has never wavered,” said Bob Bales, CEO of DataMotion. “His leadership and out-of-the-box thinking constantly inspire all of us to strive for excellence.”
Throughout his career, Tippett has been enlisted for major health and IT efforts and recognized by leading organizations. He received the U.S. Chamber’s first “Leadership in Health Care Award” for the modernization of the exchange of health information. From 2003-2005, he guided U.S. efforts in health IT and security by serving on President George W. Bush’s Information Technology Advisory Committee. From 2012-2014, he was a member of the Clinton Health Matters Initiative. Tippett was named by InfoWorld as one of the 25 most influential chief technology officers, won the Ernst & Young “Entrepreneur of the Year” award, and was publisher of Information Security Magazine for its first six years. Tippett has worked as an emergency room and helicopter physician, holds a California physician and surgeon license, and earned both a Ph.D. in biochemistry and an M.D. from Case Western Reserve University.
